Volunteer & Service Program

Community Engagement

Agahozo-Shalom needs world-wide support in order to continue to offer an exceptional home and learning environment to hundreds of young people in Rwanda. If you are interested in organizing a program in your local community, you can learn more about our Race4Rwanda here. Please contact Mara Berde at mara@asyv.org or (212) 863-1352.

Service Learning Trips

Agahozo-Shalom organizes 10-day service learning trips for various groups and institutions. Designed for 15-20 people, program participants learn about the development of Agahozo-Shalom and the history of Rwanda while taking part in a volunteer project at the Village. Groups include college and graduate programs, religious and interfaith groups, as well as community organizations. Agahozo-Shalom offers pre-trip orientations, educational materials, class sessions an extensive follow-up curriculum that brings the lessons and themes of the experience into the daily lives and communities of the volunteers. *

Long-Term Volunteer Service Corps

A select group of volunteers are sent to the Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village each December to spend one year as part of the Village staff. Volunteers serve the Village in a professional role, dictated by current needs. Past volunteers have included professional artists, IT experts, educators, farmers and many more. The volunteers are an integral part of the Village staff and are exemplars of the Agahozo-Shalom core values. Agahozo-Shalom offers a variety of opportunities for volunteers. We seek dedicated, motivated and talented volunteers who can help meet the needs of the Village while integrating naturally into the rhythm of life. Whatever your age or where you live; there are many ways to volunteer for ASYV. Applications are accepted beginning in May of each year. In 2011, five of the twelve long term volunteers were members of the JDC’s Jewish Service Corps. If you would like to apply as a JDC Service Corps Volunteer, visit their website.

Individual Volunteers

Agahozo-Shalom does not ordinarily place individual volunteers at the Village. Exceptions are made on occasion when an applicant possesses a specific skill set needed at the village. Volunteers and visitors are asked to pay a minimum of $35/day to cover the cost of their food and accommodations.
